Most conservation programs work one reef, one region, one dataset. We work two — the Caribbean and the Coral Triangle — using the same protocols in both. That matters more than it sounds: coral reefs worldwide are facing the same pressures at wildly different rates, and data that's comparable across regions is what actually lets researchers understand why.

1. Research (Understanding the Ecosystem)
The Goal: Accurate, high-quality ecological monitoring.
How We Do It: We use globally recognized protocols like Reef Check and CoralWatch alongside advanced 3D Photogrammetry to measure biodiversity, monitor coral bleaching, and create accurate digital twin models of living reefs . This ensures our baseline data is robust and scientifically valuable.
2. Develop (Actionable Restoration Solutions)
The Goal: Turning data into active ecological solutions.
How We Do It: Research is useless if it doesn't inform action. We use our monitoring insights to identify degraded zones and deploy practical initiatives. such as constructing underwater coral nurseries, out-planting heat-resilient fragments, and exploring targeted species re-introduction work.
3. Transform (Empowering People & Communities)
The Goal: Sustainable, long-term environmental and social impact .
How We Do It: Conservation only succeeds when people are empowered . We transform eco-volunteers into certified dive leaders and marine ambassadors , while actively working with local dive operators, schools, and coastal stakeholders to transition from reef exploitation to long-term stewardship.
Our Dual-Stream Approach: Science Meets Action
Why Settle for Just "Surveys" or Just "Restoration"?
Many volunteer organizations make you choose: either spend your days filling out paper survey slates or spend all your time cementing concrete blocks underwater.


Every Reef Buddy program runs two streams side by side, not one after the other:
The Research Stream — reef surveys, coral watch monitoring, data collected to Reef Check's international standard, so it can be measured against reef sites anywhere in the world.
The Restoration Stream — coral gardening, nursery work, controlled species removal. Hands-on, physical, immediate.
You're never just observing the reef, and you're never just working on it blind, without understanding what the data's telling you. Both streams inform each other — the surveys tell us where restoration is needed most; the restoration work gives us something to measure and prove.

Dauin sits within a recognized but still poorly understood pocket of reef where coral appears to resist bleaching far better than the surrounding region — and better than you'd expect during the kind of major bleaching events that have devastated reefs elsewhere, including much of the Caribbean.
Nobody fully knows why yet. That's exactly why it matters.

Alongside Silliman University's Marine Research Department and The Institute of Marine Research, Reef Buddy volunteers monitor reef health here through regular surveys — tracking coral condition, bleaching indicators, and recovery patterns over time. Because this data is collected to an internationally recognized standard, it doesn't just sit in a local file — it can be compared directly against reef sites elsewhere in the Philippines, across the Coral Triangle, and against our own long-running Caribbean data from Carriacou.
That comparison is the point. If we can understand what's protecting this stretch of reef when others are failing, it could inform how reefs are protected — or even restored — elsewhere in the world. It's one of the more genuinely open scientific questions a volunteer can contribute real data toward, rather than simply learning about secondhand.
This is what the dual-region model is actually for: not just diving in two beautiful places, but building a dataset large and consistent enough to ask — and maybe eventually answer — questions no single reef could answer alone.
