Our Expectations
Volunteers here come from all kinds of backgrounds — marine biology students, gap-year travelers, career-breakers, people who just love the ocean. What you'll have in common with everyone else on the team is simple: you actually want to be here, doing real work.
This isn't a resort stay, and it isn't meant to be. You'll dive most days, put in real hours on land and in the water, and share accommodation with the rest of the team. It's not roughing it, but it is genuine work — treat it that way and you'll get a lot more out of it.
Respecting Where You Are
You're a guest in someone else's country, not a tourist passing through. Filipinos and Grenadians are known for being warm and welcoming — the least we can do is meet that with real respect, not just politeness. You'll get a briefing on local customs when you arrive, so there's no guesswork.
Downtime, Done Sensibly
Nobody's expecting you to be a monk. There'll be drinks, there'll be celebrations, Divemaster graduations, birthdays, local fiestas, and that's part of what makes this feel like a life, not just a placement. The one rule that actually matters: if you're diving tomorrow, be fit to dive tonight. Diving is unforgiving of hangovers and worse. Beyond that, just don't be the person who ruins someone else's night.

Where We Draw the Line
Zero tolerance on drugs, violence, or bullying — full stop. If your behavior puts other volunteers, the local community, or the program itself at risk, you'll be asked to leave. We don't say this to be heavy-handed; we say it because everyone else here deserves to feel safe, and because it's genuinely rare that we ever have to use it.
What You'll Actually Get Out of It
Between the dives and the fieldwork, there's real time to unwind — the pool, the bar, dinner with people who'll become genuinely good friends fast. This work is serious, but the people doing it don't take themselves too seriously. You'll leave with a qualification, real skills, and a group of people you'll probably still be messaging in five years.

We know you've worked hard to get here—and you'll work hard while you're here too. Reef Buddy Philippines is about impact, but it's also about balance. Between dives and data sheets, there’s plenty of time to unwind: stretch out by the pool, sip a cold beer at the bar, or soak up the sun with your fellow volunteers. Conservation is serious work, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be seriously fun.
Whether it’s swapping stories around a campfire, joining a local fiesta, or just laughing over dinner after a long day underwater, you’ll find that downtime is part of the rhythm here. It’s not just about preserving reefs—it’s about building friendships, finding joy in the little things, and creating memories that last longer than your tan.
